I would like to propose the following items for your consideration as
you prepare the production of Irelands medium term policies on
agriculture. I have been brief in my descriptions and am willing to expand
on anything which is not clear or requires more input.
1. Emphasis on locally and nationally grown horticultural produce.
- To aid our balance of payments and reduce imports
- To improve food quality
- To increase jobs in horticultural and food production sectors
- To decrease environmental impact due to food transportation
2. Policy of Pesticide and Herbicide reductions,
- To improve water quality
- To improve food quality
- To reduce health problems (particularly where glyphosate is used)
3. End to live export of meat to be replaced with carcass trade
- To create Irish food processing jobs
- To promote animal welfare
- To increase tourist view of Ireland as a caring rural nation
4. Increased support for research in and production of Organic
Agriculture
- To provide higher Farm Gate income (these are premium
products)
- To access this large growth area across EU
- Ireland significantly behind in support mechanisms in comparison
with EU partners
- To maintain & increase the tourist view of Green Ireland
- To reduce imports - Currently most organic produce is imported
- To improve food quality
Moratorium on Genetically Engineered Plantings until long term independent
research demonstrates their safety and/or patent holder liability is
established in case of consumer or environmental damage.
