FIRST MEETING OF AGRI-FOOD 2010 COMMITTEE

The Minister for Agriculture and Food, Mr Joe Walsh TD, today opened the first meeting of the Agri Food 2010 Committee, which is chaired by Mr Pat O’Neill, the former Managing Director of Glanbia.

The terms of reference of the Committee are:

“To propose a strategy for the development of Irish agriculture and food over the next decade, following the agreement on Agenda 2000, and in the light of the changes and challenges which are likely to evolve nationally and internationally over that period.”

Minister Walsh said that the terms of reference were deliberately broad, in order to allow the committee the freedom to consider all the relevant issues before making policy recommendations. “We operate in a dynamic environment and our policy must evolve to meet the new challenges and opportunities which are emerging,” the Minister said.

The Minister expressed his appreciation to the membership for agreeing to take on this challenging task.

The Committee is expected to complete its work, and present a report to the Minister early in the New Year. The full membership of the Committee is set out on the Annex attached.
